In 2005, IKEA, in partnership with UNICEF, launched a unique Income Generation Initiative that gives impoverished women in India support for lasting change. Not only do I love IKEA for making affordable, stylish furnishings available globally; but, now they have partnered with UNICEF to benefit women and girls!

More than 2,000 women handcraft IKEA PS GRINDTORP pillows to earn income, self-confidence, and a strengthened status within the community. The program also allows for the creation and participation of Indian women in self-help groups that focus on entrepreneurship and saving money. The women also learn about children's rights, health and nutrition. As a result, the women's more than 75,000 children are becoming immunized and are now attending school.

CESLIE’S TIP: These amazing pillows make fantastic and MEANINGFUL gifts. IKEA sells the pillow covers and forms as well so buying the cover to mail to a friend is easy and affordable. These are especially great gifts to give to girls and young women and share the story about how these hand made pillows positively affect other women's lives.
